Located just north of downtown, Over-the-Rhine is perhaps the most famous neighborhood in Cincinnati. Over-the-Rhine is considered the most intact and largest urban historic district in the United States, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The neighborhood is praised for its historic architecture reflecting the diverse styles of the late 19th century, including Greek Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne, in addition to a few examples of Art Deco, Venetian, Gothic, and modern. Over-the-Rhine has the world’s largest collection of Italianate architecture. Located in the southern edge of Over-the-Rhine, Washington Park is the second oldest park in the city, and is the site of many community events and festivals.

Bisected by Liberty Street, Over-the-Rhine features several distinct districts, including The North Liberties and the Brewery District located north of Liberty Street, and the Gateway Quarter and Pendleton located south of Liberty Street. The Brewery District was the heart of the city’s beer brewing industry prior to the Prohibition and still hosts a number of local craft breweries. North of Liberty Street resembles historic Over-the-Rhine better than other areas that have been developed in recent years. Annual events in Over-the-Rhine include Bockfest, the Cincy Fringe Festival, MidPoint Music Festival, Cincinnati May Festival, and Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade. Major landmarks in Over-the-Rhine include Cincinnati Music Hall, the Emery Theatre, the Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, Know Theatre of Cincinnati, Memorial Hall, and more. Findlay Market is the oldest continuously operated public market in the state, and is the site of many special events and a farmers market.


Over-the-Rhine is served by Cincinnati Public Schools, which operates 42 elementary schools and 17 high schools. Additionally, there are a number of private school options in the area, and the Cincinnati area has one of the highest private school attendance rates in the country. Residents of Over-the-Rhine are located near several colleges and universities, including the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, Northern Kentucky University, Miami University, and more.
