The name “Short North” goes back to an original nickname given by police to the area during a period of decline. It was seen as a neighborhood that had fallen “just short” of the north end of the central business district. A distinctively diverse and artistic neighborhood, the Short North has experienced gentrification and a steady economic rise from its humble beginnings prior to the 1980s. During this decade, the neighborhood experienced a rebirth as local art galleries opened and the area began to flourish. In 1984, two Short North galleries, one of which is still in operation, opened new exhibits on the first Saturday of every month to promote their businesses and build a unified community culture. This event evolved into the Gallery Hop, which is still held on the first Saturday of every month on High Street.
